Cyber attackers turn "vaccine curiosity" into an opportunity
The increasing use of technology due to the new type of coronavirus epidemic has increased cyber attacks against technology companies, phishing attacks target those who are curious about vaccination and vaccination studies.
Technological Thinking Center "ThinkTech" under STM Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret AŞ, has completed the last Cyber Threat Status Report for 2020.
STM Cyber Security Manager Kadir Murat Biçer made evaluations to the AA reporter regarding the cyber attacks in 2020 and the expectations for 2021.
Biçer said that in 2020, which will be remembered with the epidemic, the effects of the epidemic were also encountered in the field of cyber security.
Stating that technology-oriented companies are generally targeted last year, and applications that sell and create technology have become the primary target, Biçer stated that institutions using remote working and educational technologies have had their share of attacks. Biçer said, "While finance and state institutions were predominantly targeted in the previous years, technology companies came to the first place with a rate of 25 percent in 2020. This rate is 19 percent in state institutions and 15 percent in the finance sector, with the increase in the use of remote working and the infrastructures for distance education due to the pandemic effect. , applications such as infrastructure, network devices, VPN technologies used with them were included in the attack surfaces. said.
Expressing that they anticipate that epidemic-based attacks may continue under different headings this year, Biçer said, "The attackers who made phishing attacks and wanted to attract people to their own harmful sites continued these attacks in the second half of 2020 to provide information about vaccination studies. We believe that phishing attacks can be faced with e-mails containing information such as registration, scheduling, and when the vaccine will be given, regarding its programs or vaccine applications. " he spoke.
Biçer warned attackers to be careful about phishing attacks, as it is important to open the first door.
Noting that ransomware, which manifested itself in 2020, will continue to increase in 2021, Kadir Murat Biçer said that harmful effects may occur in the form of ransom demands by encrypting corporate and personal data.
- "Attacks decreased as awareness increased"
Stating that the level of awareness about cyber security has increased in the face of all these experiences, Biçer made the following evaluations:
"We also see this in the success rate of threats. In the third quarter of 2020, we see that pandemic-based attacks decrease with the increase of awareness. The awareness levels of institutions are increasing. New institutions have also taken this service and made it compatible with their own systems and reduced their users and systems from being affected by such vulnerabilities and attacks. It is very difficult to have 100 percent awareness.
