Frightening result in a mask that is washed or squeezed cologne
A scary result came out in the examination of the masks that were squeezed or washed with cologne after they were used in the microbiology laboratory. It was understood that squeezing or washing cologne did not have any effect that would prevent bacterial growth.
Although the vaccination process in Turkey has started using masks as one of the most effective weapon against the virus for a while. By the Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Microbiology Laboratory, the masks that were squeezed or washed with cologne after they were used were examined. In the examination, it was determined that spraying cologne or washing the medical masks used did not have an effect that would prevent bacterial growth.
The importance of using masks in the corona virus pandemic process has been accepted by the entire scientific community. If used correctly, antivirus masks present danger when used incorrectly. In the test carried out by the academicians working in the OMU Microbiology Department, it was observed in the laboratory environment that squeezing or washing the medical masks did not prevent the growth of bacteria. When the bacteria density of normal masks, cologne squeezed masks and washed masks used for 1 day was examined, it was revealed that it was alarming that there was almost no difference between them.
"Pour cologne or any antiseptic substance on your masks and do not use them afterwards"
Stating that the use of cologne or any anti-septic on the masks does not prevent the formation of bacteria, OMU Microbiology Department Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. Yeliz Tanrıverdi Çaycı said, “We hear that people are using various procedures to reuse masks. We heard that one of them is pouring cologne. When cologne is poured into masks, unfortunately, you cannot eliminate the microorganisms there. A cleaning is required before using disinfectants and antiseptic agents, then you can apply. In our study, we saw that when we take a sample after pouring cologne on the mask, bacteria can reproduce intensely. For this reason, pour cologne or any antiseptic substance on your masks and do not use them afterwards. These masks are suitable for single use. When you think it is wet, moist or dirty, please replace it with a new one.
"Medical masks are not suitable for washing"
Drawing attention to the fact that medical masks are not suitable for washing and should not be used repeatedly, Assoc. Dr. Çaycı said, “Medical masks are not suitable for washing. By washing them, you cannot both clean them and reduce their effectiveness. Since the structure of the mask is broken, its protection decreases. Let's not wash and use the masks over and over again. Even when washed, microorganisms can easily reproduce on the mask. We know that everyone is tired of using masks, but now the only thing we can do against corona virus activity is to comply with mask, distance and hygiene rules. "Let's replace our masks with new ones when they get dirty, wet and moist."
