Dr. Afşin Emre Kayıpmaz emphasized that N95 and FFP2 style masks are not suitable for public use, whether they are vented or not, and said "N95 or FFP2 style masks with a valve are not suitable for use in airplanes or in public areas.
Ankara City Hospital Emergency Medicine Clinic Training Officer and Ministry of Health Coronavirus Scientific Committee Member Assoc. Dr. Afşin Emre Kayıpmaz warned citizens about the use of vented masks. Scientific Committee Member Kayıpmaz said that N95 or FFP2-style vented masks with a valve filter the air at a high rate while taking it in, but cannot filter it at the same rate while exiting it. For this reason, Kayıpmaz stated that it is not appropriate to use these masks in public areas, and noted that using them in public transport vehicles such as airplanes can be quite risky.
MASKS IN N95 AND FFP2 STYLE MASKS DESIGNED FOR THE USE OF HEALTHCARE WORKERS '
Stating that N95 and FFP2 style masks are designed for healthcare professionals, Assoc. Dr. Afşin Emre Kayıpmaz said, “There are masks specially designed for the use of healthcare professionals. Masks in the style of N95 and FFP2. These are custom-made masks that filter 95 percent of particles. These are masks used when you need to intubate a patient, as in our emergency rooms, or when you need to clear foreign objects from the patient's airway. People from the public are not recommended to use these masks in their daily life. The American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not recommend this either. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) does not recommend it either.
'THESE MASKS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR USE ON AIRCRAFT OR PUBLIC AREAS'
Underlining that these types of masks are not suitable for use in public areas, Scientific Committee Member Kayıpmaz said, “Especially the vented ones, yes, they are less humid and allow you to breathe more comfortably. They are suitable for construction work, for example in terms of filtering dust particles. But N95 or FFP2 style masks with valves, that is, with a valve on it, are not suitable for use in airplanes or public areas. Because these have the ability to filter while taking in the air. But I'm talking about the vented ones, it doesn't filter the air given out 100 percent. Therefore, we do not recommend that public users use ventilated masks in order not to cause a new danger. Turkish Airlines (THY) executives especially warned against using these vented masks on airplanes, ”he said.
THY PROHIBITED THE USE OF VALVE MASK
On the other hand, Turkish Airlines General Manager Bilal Ekşi stated in his social media account that the use of filtered masks was prohibited and said, "Please do not wear a vented mask inside the aircraft. For the health of the passengers, the use of vented masks inside the aircraft is prohibited by the authorities. They are requesting you to change it. Please let us help for health "he used the expressions.
