"The Struggle of the Youth in the Loudness of KYK and GSS is our Struggle!"

Office Workers Union Karaman Provincial Representative Ahmet Baştuğ made a written press statement about youth with KYK and GSS debts.

Baştuğ used the following statements in her statement:

"At the point reached by the pandemic in our country, caught in the economic crisis, the economic problems have overcome the health problems. With the addition of over ten million unemployed and the millions of people working below the hunger limit, unemployment and hunger became the primary problem of our country. While we are trying to get away with a structural problem with the discourse of “no job, there are people who do not like a job”, the unemployment rates announced, on the one hand, and the unemployment rate on the other hand continue to be ridiculed in our minds.

We are faced with a reality that three out of four university graduates are unemployed. While our youth, whose number is around five million, have KYK debt, enforcement proceedings have been initiated about 300 thousand. As BES, we express once again that the pandemic cannot be structured, it should be declared force majeure, and on the other hand, the KYK debts related to the KYK debts of the youth should be deleted. We know that young female unemployment is much higher. Young women who have difficulties in finding a job are presented as if marriage is the only way out, and they are asked to be sentenced to men. Young women are asked to assume more reproductive roles by getting married and fixing them at home with practices such as dowry money instead of deleting KYK debts and stipulating marriage as a condition of deleting the KYK debt. This once again clearly shows the role assigned to women in the order constructed by the political power.

Students Should Be Given Scholarships, Not Credit!

When the Credit and Hostels Institution was established as a social institution in 1961, it turned into an institution that lends students to students and uses a follow-up and execution mechanism that pays interest like a bank. As a result, it is clear that students use the loans they receive for education expenses (accommodation, nutrition, transportation, books, etc.).

It is a contradiction in itself that the political power, which prides itself on the fact that education is free, lends to students to go to education afterwards to cover some of their education expenses. Students' loan debts should be deleted, students should be given scholarships, not loans. Dormitories and dining halls should be made free of charge in educational institutions.

Families Are Also Victimed!

Young people who are indebted to loans are mostly children of low-income families. Most of the time, it is up to their families to pay their loan debts, as their children, who have made all kinds of sacrifices for years, cannot find a job. Political power is responsible for unemployment and the cost of living, and the price cannot be paid to young people who cannot find a job and their families.

The society of the General Directorate of Credit and Hostels Institution, which operates under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, should be restructured as an organization that prioritizes youth.
